If we lived in India, Russia, Burma, or China, we would have an equally compelling need to examine the dominant religious structures. We live here, in the U.S. where Christianity has been a dominant influence. I do think that we can make some explicit connections between Christian concepts of crusades, manifest destiny, having the one truth, dominion, and hierarchy to its use by ruling elites to justify tremendous concentrations of wealth and power. The Center for Progressive Christianity is a great organization that really gets to the philosophy of respect that is in Christianity if you know and care where to look. I think this is true for most religions out there, they can be skewed and twisted in order to be used to control and dominate, or they can be used to bring faith, hope and understanding. For example China's brutal cultural revolution, Pol Pot's slaughter of millions of people or Joseph Stalin's starvation of millions of people? Burma is a buddhist country but it's military government is extremely brutal.
